Vice President External Advocacy
| YES to Kat LaFortune |
|
My name is Katherine LaFortune. I am completing my first year of a Master of Public Administration program and I am a candidate for the position of Vice President External Advocacy. I am already an active contributing member on campus at Dalhousie -- I serve as a peer reviewer for the Dalhousie Journal for Interdisciplinary Management and volunteered at an annual conference organized by the School of Public Administration. As a student in public administration, I have completed courses that focused on the development and evaluation of public policies using different tools and measures. These skills will allow me to assess, develop, and propose effective policies on external matters in the best interests of Dalhousie graduate students. Throughout my academic and professional careers at Carleton University and working in various Government of Canada departments and elsewhere, I've developed experience in making presentations, keeping up-to-date with team members remotely, and developing and maintaining strong relationships with colleagues and coworkers. I look forward to exercising my well-developed oral, written and interpersonal communication skills as a member of VPEA. I pay close attention to detail while being able to grasp the bigger picture, qualities that would serve me well as VPEA. Overall, I believe I have a lot to contribute and I am keen to continue my studies at Dalhousie University and represent my fellow graduate students locally, provincially, and nationally.

| YES to Connor Thompson |
My name is Connor Thompson, and I'm running for the DAGS position of Director (Arts and Social Sciences, Journalism, Law and Management). I did my undergrad in political science at the (former) University of Western Ontario, where I was involved in a number of student societies and clubs as well as the orientation week program. I'm now finishing my first year in the Master of Public Administration program, and I'm the current first year social representative in the Public Administration Student Society. I like helping out in any way I can, and I think my involvement reflects that.
I believe that the key to this position is communication, whether between myself and students, societies, or the DAGS Board and Council. I'm here to represent the interests of your faculty on the Board, and I'll make every effort to ensure that you've got a voice.
My academic background focused heavily on presentations and seminar discussions, and I've got no problem voicing my opinion on an issue. This position requires someone who is willing to speak up on your behalf, and I'm more than capable of doing so.
To sum it all up, I am committing to represent all arts and social sciences, journalism, law, and management graduate students to the best of my ability. If elected, I'll do everything in my power to stay in communication with your faculty societies and keep you informed on all issues that affect your student life at Dal!

I'm a first year student in the Master of Public Administration program. Born in Winnipeg, I completed a BA in political science at the University of Victoria in 2007. From 2007 to 2011, I worked in communications and research for both B.C. and federal governments.
Over the past year I've been involved in a number of events around Dalhousie and Halifax. I volunteered with the Nocturne art festival, acted as a peer reviewer for the Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management, sat on the organizing committee for the Atlantic Conference on Public Administration, and helped administer the recent DSU elections as a member of the Elections Committee.
I was similarly engaged in Victoria, where I volunteered in an advocacy capacity with an anti-poverty organization, as well as contributed to the university's student newspaper and community radio station.
I'm running for this position because I believe I can be an effective advocate for graduate students' interests. If elected, my priority will be to ensure that the Senate's deliberations are informed by the issues and concerns of the graduate student community. I'll also strive for transparency by maintaining open lines of communication between DAGS and the Senate.
I'm excited about the opportunity to become involved in DAGS, and I'd be honoured to serve as your Senate representative.

My wife and I moved to Halifax on September of 2010 to start a PhD in Biology at Dal. We come from the city of Concepcion in Chile. There I studied Biology and then a M.Sc in Zoology.
While most of my time as a student I have been working in an office and in the lab I have always spent some time doing other activities at the university. As undergraduate student at Universidad de Concepcion in Chile I was President of the students of the Natural Sciences faculty and director of the Student Welfare Committee. Later, as an M.Sc student, I worked on the discussion group to create the first Association of Graduate Students at the University.
At Dal, this is the first time that I am running for a position at DAGS. I decided to do it because I think that my past experience and the different points of view of an international student might be useful to have a broad perspective to discuss working ideas and to propose some new ones at the Senate.
As Senator I would like to represent to every Graduate student, considering those concerns of International Students that are necessary to put on the table.
